UPDATE: One man is dead after a crash between an 18-wheeler and an SUV in Ascension Parish.
It happened on Highway 70 near the Sunshine Bridge.
State Police say the 18-wheeler crossed the center line and hit a 2002 GMC Yukon, killing the driver of the SUV. Investigators will not release his name until his family is notified.
The driver of the 18-wheeler was identified as Gregory Stagg of Baton Rouge. He had minor injuries and is now in police custody.
State Police thought the tanker was hauling ammonia, but it was empty. The cab and rear axle caught fire after the crash and officers expect to clear the scene shortly.
Investigators originally said the Sunshine Bridge was closed in both directions, however, drivers were able to cross after they were diverted around the accident.
