LIVONIA - A man allegedly went on a violent crime spree early Sunday morning, starting with a kidnapping in St. Landry Parish that led to a shooting involving police.

"A maniac." That's how Livionia Police Chief Brad Joffrion described 26-year-old John Mauldwin of Port Barre.

According to the Livonia Police Department, the suspect kidnapped a victim in St. Landry Parish and forced them to drive him to Livonia.

Once in Livonia, Mauldwin attempted an armed robbery at a local convenience store. The suspect allegedly shot at a store clerk and police officers that were responding to the scene.

The driver of the vehicle fled as Mauldwin got out of the car.

He then allegedly fled to a nearby home, where he forcefully entered and held the residents hostage. During this time, the he also allegedly tried to sexually assault one of the victims in the home, according to Livonia PD.

One person in the home was eventually able to overpower the suspect and hold him until police arrived.

"It was a dangerous situation," Joffrion said. "[The victims] didn't have a whole lot of choice in their situation. You had an armed madman in the home."

Mauldwin was taken into custody by Livonia PD. He is charged with armed robbery, attempted first-degree murder, attempted murder of a police officer, home invasion and attempted first-degree rape.

Mauldwin is currently held in the Pointe Coupee Parish Prison on a $3,850,000 bond.
