Man involved in slaying sentenced in drug case
A figure in the 1993 ambush slaying of police Cpl. Betty Smothers has been sentenced to five years in prison for a felony cocaine possession conviction.
West Paul has been jailed since August 2008 on the drug charge.
The judge gave the 37-year-old Paul credit for the 18 months he has been in parish prison on the charge.
Paul pleaded guilty to the charge in August.
Paul was paroled in 2006 after serving 13 years of a 25-year term for attempted armed robbery in Smothers' killing.
Smothers was working an off-duty security job when she was shot on Jan. 7, 1993.
