Man charged with mowing down sea gulls with truck
NEW ORLEANS - State wildlife officials filed federal charges against an Assumption Parish man after they said he killed dozens of sea gulls in a New Orleans suburb parking lot.
Agents cited Jackoby Bertot, 30, of Labadieville for violating the Migratory Bird Treaty Act the night of Sept. 23. They said Bertot sped through a resting flock of sea gulls in the Elmwood area parking lot with his pickup, killing a total of 49 birds.
Investigators said they identified Bertot using surveillance video, witness statements and other interviews.
If convicted Bertot could face up to a $15,000 fine and six months imprisonment. Additional fines could be imposed for each bird killed.
