Man booked in abduction of mother, 2-year-old
DENHAM SPRINGS- Deputies arrested a man, accused of kidnapping a woman and her 2 year-old, then leading deputies on a high speed chase Saturday.
Details of the arrest were released Thursday.
Livingston Parish Sheriff's deputies reported that the St. Helena Parish Sheriff's Office said Charles Smith abducted the woman and her child at gunpoint from the Dollar General store on LA Highway 16 then drove into St. Helena and possibly Tangipahoa before returning to St. Helena where deputies tried to stop the car they were in just before the Livingston Parish line. The car had been reported stolen.
Smith was stopped but fled on foot, deputies said.
St. Helena Parish Sheriff Nat Williams told investigating deputies in Livingston Parish there is reason to believe that a rape occurred while Smith took the mother and child on the wild ride
Later, Smith was caught and booked into the Livingston Parish Jail on multiple kidnapping charges and also has an outstanding warrant for rape in Tangipahoa Parish.
"I am saddened by this type of crime happening in our parish," Livingston Sheriff Jason Ard said.
"This particular location is close to my home - and we are frequent visitors."
"We are fortunate that we have an adjoining Sheriff in St. Helena that is as committed to solving crime. Sheriff Williams and I were in constant contact sharing information. That was a vital piece in the quick capture of the suspect."
More charges against Smith are possible.
