PLAQUEMINE- Iberville Parish Sheriff's deputies transferred a man into their jail Tuesday night and charged him with the murder of a man whose body was found in a sugar cane field earlier this year.

Mark Roy, 44, was arrested near Lafayette earlier in the day. He is charged with second degree murder and principal to felony theft.

Investigators said Roy killed Avery Hastings, 42, in January. Hastings' body was found in the field off Sidney Road, near Rosedale.

Previous reports suggested Hastings was murdered and his body was dumped and left for about a week before it was discovered.

More information could be released Wednesday.
