Second suspect arrested in connection to body found in Ascension canal
GONZALES - The Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office has arrested a second person in the death of Alex Rubio, found in a canal Tuesday afternoon.
Deputies say 18-year-old Kevin Ross was arrested at the home of a relative on Friday for 1st Degree Murder and Obstruction of Justice. Jamar Jones, also 18, was arrested on Thursday on the same charges.
Investigators say Alex Rubio was riding in a vehicle with Jones and another Ross Sunday night. They say Jones and Ross shot Rubio before dumping his remains into the New River Canal. A driver found the body while driving through the area on Tuesday.
Gonzales Police arrested Jones Tuesday on unrelated charges of illegal carry of a weapon and possession of marijuana. They say the handgun in Jones' possession is consistent with the type that killed Rubio. Jones faces charges of stealing a vehicle in Gonzales last Friday night and burning the vehicle in Darrow on Sunday.
An autopsy and investigation revealed Rubio had been shot twice by a small caliber handgun to the head, Chief Deputy Bobby Webre said.
