Man arrested for kidnapping now faces rape charges
DENHAM SPRINGS - A man accused of a January aggravated kidnapping in Livingston Parish now faces an additional charge of aggravated rape, according to the Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office.
The new charge will be added to the charges from Jan. 24 of aggravated kidnapping, aggravated kidnapping of a child and two counts of false imprisonment that Charles A. Smith, 28, was already behind bars for in Livingston Parish. Investigators recovered evidence in support of the victim's claim that Smith raped one of the victims while in Tangipahoa Parish.
"Investigators in Livingston, St. Helena and Tangipahoa Parishes have discovered that the crime of aggravated rape actually occurred in Tangipahoa Parish. Because the original crime started in Livingston Parish, my department will continue to be the lead," said Sheriff Jason Ard of LPSO.
Smith is currently in Livingston Parish Detention Center while the investigation remains ongoing.
