Ascension Parish Sheriff's deputies arrested 43-year-old Lawrence J. Furlow for the hit-and-run of 15-year-old Brent Duet.
The teen was riding his bike with a friend on Saturday at 2 a.m. They were on Cannon Road, near Stevens Park, in Gonzales. Duet's grandmother Patricia Butler says he wasn't supposed to be out at that time of night, but he was headed to his other grandmother's home.
"His little brother was sleeping over there. So, they were going over there. He wasn't even half a mile from her house," Butler said.
Witnesses told investigators a white SUV hit the boy from behind and drove off. Investigators matched Furlow's vehicle and the damage to the front driver's side to evidence found at the scene.
Duet suffered severe injuries to his back, head and several internal organs.
"We forgive the man who did this. We just hope he would become a better person if anything like this would happen," Butler said.
According to the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office, Furlow is charged with felony hit-and-run, negligent injury, driving under suspension, and careless operation.
