PRAIRIEVILLE – Police say a man faces drug and burglary charges after he was seen roaming around abandoned homes in Prairieville last week.

The Ascension Parish Sheriff's deputies responded to Barbara Road on Mar. 24 in reference to a suspicious man roaming around abandoned homes. At the scene, deputies found 20-year-old Stephen Kennedy who told investigators that he was walking home.

Deputies searched Kennedy and found several stolen items as well as methamphetamine. He was taken into custody and transported to Ascension Parish Jail. While en route to the jail, deputies say Kennedy tried to get out of the handcuffs. When deputies stopped the car to check Kennedy for weapons, he briefly escaped custody but was apprehended.

Investigators learned that the stolen items were linked to a vehicle burglary committed earlier that afternoon. Information was received that Kennedy also stole a vehicle from Baton Rouge and it was later located near the area of his arrest.

Kennedy was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, simple burglary, criminal trespass, possession of methamphetamine, two counts of resisting an officer, two counts of simple escape and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Kennedy was transported to the Ascension Parish Jail where his bond was set at $39,000.
