Man arrested for attempted murder after argument, alleged drive-by shooting

BATON ROUGE - A 19-year-old Baton Rouge man was arrested after a reported drive-by shooting on Saturday, according to authorities.

On Nov. 5, the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's office said deputies were called to the area of Southpark Dr. and Ansley Ave. in reference to shots fired. Upon arrival, deputies learned a gun was reportedly fired at the victim following a verbal altercation.

The victim advised deputies that, prior to the incident, she and a neighbor were involved in a verbal argument, according to officials. The victim said that the neighbor then left area, and a white car was seen approaching the area shortly after, officials said.

After making contact with her, officials said the driver of the vehicle, Dehdrick Burton, 19, and the victim got into a verbal argument. The driver then proceed down the road in the vehicle and stopped prior to approaching Southpark Dr., according to officials.

The victim reportedly then saw Burton open the door, hanging his arm out the car with a gun, according to officials. The victim said she saw the firearm pointed in her direction and heard a gunshot before the vehicle drove away, officials said.

Deputies on scene provided a description of the suspect's vehicle. Officials said the vehicle was seen leaving the area and stopped near the scene of the incident.

Upon Burton's arrest, after being searched, authorities said he was found with a 9mm handgun and marijuana.

Burton was then transported to the Violent Crimes Unit where he admitted to pointing the gun at the victim, but said he did not discharge it, officials said. He also admitted ownership of the handgun and the marijuana, according to officials.

Burton was booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison for attempted first degree murder, assault by drive-by shooting, possession of marijuana and possession of a firearm with drugs.
