BATON ROUGE - Police say they’ve arrested a man accused of attempting to take off in a woman’s car with her 5-year-old son and baby onboard when she left her vehicle to break up a fight at a Greenwell Springs Road motel last month.

20-year-old Jerome Eackels was booked on four counts of aggravated criminal damage to property, attempted simple kidnapping and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

The incident happened on Mar. 2 in the 6400 block of Greenwell Springs at Sherdan Motel when the victim arrived at the motel where she witnessed Eackels beating her cousin. She told authorities that she left the door to her vehicle open as she got out to try to break up the fight, only to have Eackels jump into the driver’s seat and slam the car into drive.

Police said Eackels crashed the victim’s car into the building as he was attempting to flee the scene. The victim’s 5-year-old son and half month old baby were inside of the vehicle at the time of the wreck.

Two other people inside of the building were injured in the crash. The vehicle was damaged, and police estimated that $1,600 worth of damage was done to the building.
