BATON ROUGE - The Investigative Unit has learned a man arrested Monday for an armed robbery that occurred in May should have been in prison.

Police arrested Roland King, Jr. and charged him in the armed robbery of the Chevron Station on Highland Road in Old South Baton Rouge on May 24, 2016. According to an arrest report, King, 48, was caught by surveillance cameras pointing a gun at the station's cashier. The clerk gave the suspect around $1,500 in cash, before the robber fled.

The arrest report also states that King's wife contacted police and told them that she had seen her husband on the news. She was able to give police clothes that has striking similarities to the clothing worn by the armed robber in the picture.

The Investigative Unit has learned that, according to court documents, King was sentenced to 66 years in prison in 1993 as a habitual offender. Media reports from that year indicate he was accused in a month-long crime spree where he used a kitchen knife in a string of robberies in the same area where the one occurred in May. 

In addition to being arrested on Armed Robbery charges Monday, BRPD also arrested King on Sunday on Domestic Abuse Battery and False Imprisonment charges. According to an arrest report for that incident, King's wife asked him to leave the house, but he refused. She told police that when she attempted to leave, he slammed the door shut and told her that if she attempted to contact police, he would kill her.

That same arrest report notes that King told police he is on parole for armed robbery until 2048. It is unclear when he was released from prison.
