A man has been arrested following a hit-and-run pedestrian fatality early this morning off Highway 22 in St. Amant.

22-year-old Brandon Patrick Ivey, St. Amant, was driving home from a local lounge when he hit 54-year-old Lauris Ackerman, Livingston Parish. Ivey was on his cell phone when he lost control of his vehicle on River Highlands Drive and ran over a curb into a vacant lot. He told authorities he thought he had hit a transformer or phone box. He then drove home and later reported to work.

Authorities said Ackerman had called his mother for a ride home after leaving on foot from the same lounge as Ivey. Ackerman’s mother said she never found her son walking on the road. She said she continued to look and found him lying unresponsive in a weeded area of a vacant lot around 7:30 a.m.

Police located Ivey’s vehicle and said it had damage consistent with the crime scene findings. Ivey surrendered to authorities a short time later. He is in the Ascension Parish Jail and is charged with negligent homicide, hit-and-run, reckless operation of a vehicle, driving under suspension and expired MVI. No bond has been set as of yet.
