THORNTON, Colo. - Police have arrested a Colorado man after moviegoers reported that he carried a handgun strapped to his waist into a multiplex theater in Thornton yesterday.

A police spokesman says people were fleeing the theaters, yelling that there was a man with a gun. Nine theaters were evacuated.

The man who was arrested, James Mapes, tells the Denver Post that he has a concealed weapons permit, and that he's gone to the theater dozens of times carrying a pistol, either openly or concealed. He says he was "a threat to no one."

He was released after being cited and given a summons. Police say he was cited for displaying a weapon and alarming another person. Prosecutors are reviewing the case, and the charges might be dropped if they determine that Mapes was complying with Colorado's concealed carry law. It allows people who pass background checks and get training to carry guns in most circumstances.

Theaters across the country have been jittery since the shootings earlier this month near Denver that killed 12 people.
