A Thibodaux man serving a 40-year sentence for manslaughter will appear in district court later this month to request an appeal, claiming his attorney inadequately represented him.
Steven Butler pleaded guilty more than two years ago to a lessened charge of manslaughter in the stabbing death of Peter Andras Jr.
The 59-year-old Andras was stabbed with a flathead screwdriver on July 1, 2005.
Butler could have received a life sentence if a trial jury had convicted him of second-degree murder.
Now, Butler accuses the attorney who negotiated his plea agreement of providing ineffective counsel that resulted in his lengthy sentence.
