Man allegedly kills friend after rape of relative
BATON ROUGE - People close to a man accused of murdering his friend said they were shocked by the events which Baton Rouge Police called a case of vigilante justice.
Yovanni Ramos-Salazar shot and killed Joel Guevara Sunday night after a brief argument, according to the Baton Rouge Police Department. Both men lived in the same apartment complex with their families.
A mutual friend, who spoke to News 2 anonymously, said the shooting has them rattled.
"It took me by surprise how this turned out," said the friend. "Yovanni is a father and a husband. He has two little girls, and Joel is just a hard working man."
Investigators believe the shooting stemmed from an incident at the Vel Rose Motel on Airline Highway in January. A relative of Ramos-Salazar told police that Guevara raped her while she was at work. She says Guevara confessed his love to her and then attacked after she rejected him.
An arrest warrant shows that victim statements, text messages and DNA results gave police enough evidence to arrest Guevara. Witnesses say Yovanni grew angry while waiting for an arrest and took things into his own hands.
"No one has the right to take someone's life, but in the heat of the moment Yovanni may have felt angry," said the mutual friend. "It was his friend, and if that happened like that I think any man would go to the extremes."
Investigators believe Yovanni Ramos-Salazar is driving a silver 2000 Toyota Tundra pickup truck. Anyone with information as to his whereabouts should call the Violent Crimes Unit at (225) 389-4869.
