BATON ROUGE - A bystander was seriously hurt after an argument escalated to speeding cars and gunfire in a Baton Rouge neighborhood, police say.

The incident was reported before 3 p.m. Thursday on W Johnson Street. Police initially said it was believed the driver was fleeing the area after the sound of gunshots rang out nearby and struck the victim in the process.

But arrest documents obtained Friday paint a different picture.

An investigation revealed Brandon Lang was locked into an argument wielding two guns in the minutes leading up to the crash. A police affidavit says Lang began to drive away after he was threatened by the gun-wielding man but pulled a u-turn and began to drive back in the opposite direction at high speed.

A woman who was among a crowd of people who had gathered in the street was hit by Lang's car and made her "fly into the air," according to police. Surveillance video revealed a gunshot was fired just before Lang's vehicle made contact with the woman.

Emergency responders arrived to find the woman unconscious and in critical condition. She was rushed to an area hospital.

Lang was taken in by police and charged with attempted second-degree murder. It's unclear if the other man involved in the argument is facing any charges.
