BATON ROUGE - Police charged a Baton Rouge man with aggravated battery after officers said he hit a woman in the face with a tire rim over the weekend.

Officers arrested 36-year-old Sherman Lee Bessie Monday morning, and said he also had an outstanding warrant for attempted murder in Baton Rouge.

Police said they were called to 1865 Arizona Street around 9 p.m. Sunday and found a woman with deep cuts to her face. Investigators said the woman told them Bessie threw a tire rim at her face, and officers found the rim at the scene.

BRPD said they came back to the same location after 1 a.m. Monday and found Bessie in a stolen SUV. Investigators arrested him and found at that time he had a warrant out for his arrest in connection with a Dec. 8 shooting on Shay Avenue.

Officers booked Bessie into the East Baton Rouge Parish jail. He had not been given a bond as of midday Monday.
