Man accused of beating wife to death with bat
GEISMAR - Investigators said an Ascension Parish man beat his estranged wife to death with a baseball bat and broke her 18-year-old son's arm this weekend.
Sheriff Jeff Wiley said 38-year-old David Johnson of Geismar faces first degree murder charges for the death of 45-year-old Monica Johnson as well as attempted murder charges.
Wiley said David Johnson broke into Monica Johnson's home after a party Sunday to celebrate her son's acceptance into college. Investigators said Johnson armed himself with a bat and attacked the 18-year-old, breaking his arm, then beat his wife to death before fleeing the scene.
"The worst possible crime by an historically abusive husband," Wiley said of what happened inside the home on Canterbury Park.
Deputies in West Baton Rouge Parish arrested David Johnson around 1 a.m. after they were told by Ascension Parish authorities he was a person of interest in her murder.
The sheriff said Monica Johnson sought a restraining order on her husband after an incident in December when she said he tried to strangle her over a matter with her phone. He was arrested, and the restraining order was served last month.
"He would park his car down the road or behind the house and literally go through the woods or the back or the front, and stalk," Wiley said.
Authorities booked Johnson into the Ascension Parish jail early Monday on charges of first degree murder, attempted first degree murder, aggravated burglary with a weapon, and violation of protection orders.
Wiley advised women who might be in bad relationships, to consider protecting themselves more heavily.
"For a woman who is a victim - and a repeat victim - and fears for her life, go get a concealed weapon permit; find you a safe gun, learn how to use it. Buy it, learn how to store it safely, and use it," he said.
