NEW ROADS - Friends of a 91-year-old woman found beaten to death in her home say there were problems long before the man accused of killing her, was arrested.

Beulah Morris was found dead lying in a pool of her own blood Tuesday. Last night her grandson, 24-year-old Brandon Battley, was arrested in Lafayette.

This isn't Battley's first run-in with the law: in the past police arrested him for multiple drug possession charges and simple battery in 2010. No charges have been filed in any case.

His grandmother's neighbors are dealing with difficult news. Neighbors say they watched Battley grew up. He was often seen helping his grandmother around the house, mowing the lawn and taking out the trash.

"I hate to see this happen, but this is something that you can't predict," said Rose Geurin.

Geurin knew Morris for over 40 years, but says her grandson was troubled from the beginning.

"He would just walk and, you know, like somebody ain't got all his right mind," she said. "I knew he didn't have all his right mind in the beginning."

Battley remains on close watch in an isolated cell at the Pointe Coupee Parish jail.
