St. George: Annexation would "invalidate" petition
BATON ROUGE - The Mall of Louisiana and Baton Rouge General Medical Center submitted requests recently to be annexed into the city limits of Baton Rouge, according to city officials.
An official with the East Baton Rouge Metro Council said Mayor Kip Holden's office submitted a letter Friday which had both requests along with it.
The two properties are big components of the proposed budget put together by supporters of an effort to incorporate much of southern East Baton Rouge Parish into a new city named St. George. Annexation of these properties into Baton Rouge had been discussed as a measure to countering the incorporation efforts.
The St. George movement posted on their Facebook page that if the annexation were successful, it would derail their current attempts to petition for incorporation because they would need to redraw the proposed city's boundaries.
"We believe that if the Mall of Louisiana and Baton Rouge General Medical Center are annexed into the city of Baton Rouge it would invalidate the current petition and bring the democratic process to a halt," the post said.
A statement from Baton Rouge General said they made the decision based on research done by LSU economists, the Baton Rouge Area Foundation, and the Baton Rouge Area Chamber of Commerce which raised concerns about the viability of the proposed St. George city.
"Baton Rouge General has served the surrounding 9-parish region for more than a century, and this decision will not distract from what we do every day - that is, putting patients and families first, across our entire service region, to deliver the highest quality of care possible," said Evelyn Hayes, MD, Chair, Baton Rouge General Board of Trustees. "At the same time, we recognize the valid reasons that underlie this proposal, and support continued collaborative discussion that can inform and address the concerns of our citizens - namely our children and our schools."
