Lying on the internet legal in Rhode Island
It may be wrong to lie but it's legal if you do it on the internet in Rhode Island. State lawmakers repealed an obscure law from 1989 that made lying on the internet a misdemeanor punishable by fines up to $500 and up to a year in prison. It made it illegal to fudge your age on a dating site, to text someone claiming to be someone else or claiming to be someplace you weren't. The law was rarely enforced. State Rep. Chris Blazejewski pushed to have the law overturned saying lies may make you a scoundrel but they shouldn't make you a criminal unless it was fraud or another offense.
