Dominant defense won LSU national titles twice in the past decade.

That wasn't expected to be the case this season with new starters at seven spots.

Yet even as No. 15 LSU's offense struggles to find its rhythm, the Tigers' youthful defense is making big plays to win games with 10 sacks already.

This year's unit has been led by some new starters including senior defensive tackle Drake Nevis, who has 3½ sacks, and redshirt freshman defensive end Sam Montgomery, who has two sacks.

LSU's sack total leads the nation and its 21 tackles for losses ranks second behind No. 17 Miami.

And the Tigers haven't even had the benefit of a home crowd yet.

That changes when they host Mississippi State on Saturday night.
