BATON ROUGE - Prosecutors filed simple battery charges Monday against an LSU football player accused of knocking a woman unconscious recently in Baton Rouge.

Police arrested Jalen Mills on June 11 on suspicion of second degree battery, a felony. District Attorney Hillar Moore said they chose to file a formal charge of misdemeanor simple battery because it fit the evidence his office was given.

Head football coach Les Miles initially suspended Mills from the team after his arrest. Mills was back at practice Monday working out with the team, and Miles said he would serve an in-house suspension.

Investigators said on May 4 Mills punched a woman and knocked her out after she knocked on his apartment door and said she was looking for a friend.

The attorney representing Mills said police did not get the full story before arresting his client.
