BATON ROUGE - At the last minute former LSU ace pitcher Kevin Gausman reached a deal to join the Baltimore Orioles today, inking a contract with a $4.32 million signing bonus.
The Orioles picked Gausman in the first round of the MLB draft, and had until 4 p.m. today to come to terms on a contract. The deal Friday was $120,000 over slot for the Louisiana State right-hander.
A draft-eligible sophomore, he was 11-1 with a 2.72 ERA for the Tigers with 128 strikeouts in 115 2-3 innings.
After the deal had been reached Gausman announced on Twitter: "Happy to be the newest member of the Baltimore Orioles organization!!! Living my dream!!"
LSU baseball head coach Paul Manieri was briefing media when news of the deal came out. He took time out to call Gausman and congratulate him on the decision.
"I was holding a spot on the roster just in case," Manieri laughed.
