OVERLAND PARK, Ks. - Senior LSU pitcher Rachele Fico was one of 30 softball players from across the country named as a candidate for the 2013 CLASS awards.
Fico, a Connecticut native, plans to honor the 26 victims of the Sandy Hook school massacre by completing 26 random acts of kindness with her teammates during the 2013 season. The good deeds will be described on a blog at LSU's sports website, and on a board in the team's clubhouse.
The award, whose name stands for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, honors senior student-athletes who are at the top of their game on the field, in the classroom, and in the community. The list of candidates will be narrowed mid-season to 10 finalists, who will be placed on the official ballot for the award.
Former All-American Tiger Brittany Mack was a finalist for the 2012 award.
Fico is a two-time member of the SEC's Academic Honor Roll and was selected as one of three team captains for the 2013 season. She has 60 career wins with 26 shutouts, and is off to a 6-0 start with a 0.38 ERA and 51 strikeouts this season.
