LSU's Aaron Nola goes to the Phillies
BATON ROUGE - The Philadelphia Phillies tapped LSU star pitcher Aaron Nola as the seventh overall pick in the MLB Amateur Draft Thursday night.
The right-hander finished the year 11-1 with a 1.47 ERA. He was second in the nation in strikeouts with 134, and led the SEC in innings pitched (116.1) and opponent batting average (.172).
Nola was also SEC Pitcher of the Year two years in a row, a 2014 first team All-American, and has the third all-time highest career strikeouts among LSU pitchers.
Nola is one of five finalists for the Dick Howser Trophy, and up for the Golden Spikes award for best amateur baseball player in the country, with voting still going on at the Golden Spikes website.
Sports 2 will have more on Nola's draft pick tonight on News 2 at 10.
