BATON ROUGE - The No. 2 LSU gymnastics team exploded for a program-best 198.375 score to beat No. 16 Minnesota's 195.450 as a record crowd of 13,179 fans cheered the Tigers to victory Friday night in the Maravich Center.
LSU (11-1, 7-0 SEC) shattered the school record on vault with a 49.825, crushing the old record of 49.650 set at the NCAA Regional last season. The Tigers posted a 49.700 on floor, tying the school record set last season against Missouri. LSU also added a 49.475 on beam and 49.375 on bars to reach the record team score.
Minnesota dropped to 8-6 overall after scoring a 48.950 on vault, 48.700 on bars, 48.750 on beam and 49.050 on floor to finish with a 195.450.
LSU earned three perfect 10.0 scores in the meet, tying the single-meet school record set in 2004. Jessie Jordan and Rheagan Courville tallied 10s on vault, and Lloimincia Hall posted a 10 on floor. The only other time LSU scored three 10s in one meet was Feb. 23, 2004 when April Burkholder picked up a 10 on vault and Nicki Butler and Terin Martinjak each earned 10s on floor in a meet at Texas Woman's.
Sophomore Ashleigh Gnat recorded her second all-around title with a career-best 39.725, while Jordan placed second with a personal-best 39.675. Freshman Myia Hambrick also shattered her career high in the all-around to finish third with a 39.575.
Courville earned her eighth bars title of the season with a 9.925, and she and Jordan tied for the vault title with perfect 10.0s. It marked the first 10 of Jordan's career and the third on vault for Courville.
Gnat captured her second beam title of the season and fifth of her career with a 9.925.
Hall added to her LSU record total of perfect 10s on floor with the sixth 10 of her career against the Golden Gophers. It also marked her 29th career floor title.
The crowd of 13,179 broke the record of 12,217 set two weeks ago against Florida.
"The whole meet experience tonight was incredible," LSU head coach D-D Breaux said "We had to make adjustments in lineups tonight, and the ladies handled that responsibility and got the job done. This team has been about each other, and they gave such a team effort to come away with a phenomenal performance.
"I am also so thrilled at the crowd, not only with them packing the arena but with the energy and excitement they gave tonight. I love to see the community come out and support their Fighting Tigers."
