BATON ROUGE - LSU capped an impressive National Signing Day by finishing with the second-ranked recruiting class in the nation, including top prospects in several key positions.

Besides landing the top-ranked high school recruit in the nation, St. Augustine running back Leonard Fournette, the Tigers also scored an offensive asset in Malachi Dupre from River Ridge, who some scouting services called the best wide receiver in the country.

Dupre said part of the reason he picked LSU over national champion Florida State was due to state pride.

"I got a good relationship with all the coaching staffs, I just felt it was right to stay home and play football in the state of Louisiana and try to bring a championship back to the state," Dupre told Sports 2.

LSU gained 23 in all Wednesday, with 10 offense standouts, 11 defense recruits and a kicker rounding out the list. Nine of those players are from out of state, including from Texas, Mississisppi, Florida and Illinois, where the Tigers picked up that state's player of the year, linebacker Clifton Garrett.

LSU will make one more recruit official on Thursday. Oklahoma's Deondre Clark faxed in his paperwork, but didn't hold a signing ceremony because he school is out due to icy weather.

Rivals.com ranked Alabama as the No. 1 recruiting class in the nation Wednesday, the fourth consecutive year for the Crimson Tide. Rashaan Evans, a linebacker from Auburn, gave them a late nudge by choosing the Tide instead of Auburn and UCLA.

Other schools in the state are picking up solid signees as well. Southern University gained Central QB Jarrad Hayes as a commitment, along with East Feliciana High's multi-talented Danny Johnson.

Jaylon Ferguson, a defensive end for West Feliciana, was one of the first to sign Wednesday morning, inking his financial aid agreement with Louisiana Tech.

"They just made it feel like family," said Ferguson about his commitment to the Bulldogs. "I'm going to focus mainly on defensive end or outside linebacker [there]."
