LSU enrollment largely holds steady despite turbulent summer
BATON ROUGE - A tumultuous Baton Rouge summer hasn't made a sizable dent in enrollment on LSU's campus, calming previous concerns the student count could plummet.
The Advocate reports that when the fall semester opened, enrollment was down almost 10 percent - about 2,600 students - from last year. That would have been a steep financial hit.
But by Friday, the drop in students had fallen to less than 2 percent, a loss of about 530 students. Enrollment was largely back to normal, at about 30,400 students.
LSU officials say they're relieved. It wasn't clear how many students would show up after state lawmakers levied a cut on the TOPS college tuition program, shootings in Baton Rouge raised tensions over race relations and the region was hit with catastrophic flooding.
