BATON ROUGE – Coach Paul Mainieri and several former members of the 2009 National Championship LSU Baseball team came together again to help children with heart defects in Louisiana.
Mainieri and six of his former players appeared last night at “Home Run for Hearts”, an event to raise money for the Louisiana Pediatric Cardiology Foundation.
“What made this 2009 championship team so special was the fact that every single individual had overcome some adversity along the way to the championship” said Coach Mainieri.
The former LSU players in attendance were Buzzy Haydel, Sean Ochinko, Ryan Schimpf, Nicholas Pontiff, Chris McGhee, and Blake Dean.
The Louisiana Pediatric Cardiology Foundation provides support to area children who are suffering from cardiac disease and their families. While children with heart defects can be monitored by local pediatric cardiologists, surgery to treat their condition is usually done out of state.
