BATON ROUGE - LSU Baseball team will be heading to Metairie on Tuesday to play University of Louisiana at Lafayette in the annual Wally Pontiff Jr. Foundation Classic.
The Classic comes after a three-game series against the University of Alabama to begin SEC play where LSU came out with a one-game win. The proceeds for Tuesday night’s game will go to the Wally Pontiff Jr. Foundation, which benefits charitable organizations throughout Louisiana.
Wally Pontiff, Jr. was an all-SEC third baseman at LSU and died in 2002 at the age of 21 due to a heart abnormality.
Last season LSU had an 8-6 win over ULL in the Classic. LSU Coach Paul Mainieri said that the team is “honored” to participate in the Wally Pontiff, Jr. Foundation Classic each season.
Mainieri said that freshman Cole McKay will make his first collegiate start on Tuesday as pitcher.
The game will be televised on Cox Sports Television, and online at ESPN3.com. In addition, the game will be carried on 98.1 FM.
The game starts at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Mar. 22 at the Zephyr Field in Metairie, La.
