BATON ROUGE - LSU baseball came just two hits away from throwing a combined no-hitter for the first time in school history Friday night, defeating Va Tech 9-0.
Aaron Nola led the way for the Tigers with eight strikeouts in seven scoreless innings to cruise through the Hokie lineup without surrendering a hit.
Head coach Paul Mainieri defended taking Nola out of the game without a hit by saying, "We're not going to put Nola's future ahead of anything."
Nola also said after the game he understood why his coach took him out.
"It's only the second game," said the junior right hander. "We've got the whole year to worry about."
Sean McMullen contributed a three-run homer as well, his first of the year.
The Tigers take on Toledo Saturday at 6pm.
