LSU-Alexandria OK'd to offer more sports
BATON ROUGE - LSU-Alexandria will introduce five additional sports programs by the 2014-15 academic year.
The additional sports will be financed through a student athletic fee, booster support, and other donor gifts.
Students voted in mid-March to expand athletic programs and to increase student athletic fees. That vote was affirmed by the Board of Supervisors' vote on Wednesday.
The new sports will include men's and women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, and women's tennis, bringing the total number of sports on the campus to seven. Those will join baseball and softball, which began in the spring semester of the 2007-08 academic year.
Officials say the expansion of the athletic program will help foster a more traditional campus atmosphere, aid in the development of co-curricular activities and act as a recruitment tool.
