BATON ROUGE- State Police Superintendent Mike Edmonson says there is a need for a new cadet academy to fill the ranks.

Edmonson told a budget review committee that is hard to plan while the state's money problems continue.

Edmonson told the Louisiana House Appropriations Committee that there were 650 troopers on the road in 2008, but only 575 now. He says the problem is not critical right now, but an academy needs to take place by 2015.

Edmonson says a program that assigns troopers to specific parishes helps make sure rural areas are covered. Retirees have also been brought back at a part time level to man certain office jobs. Edmonson says that allows more full time troopers to work road patrols.
