LSP investigating suspect's death in Opelousas chase
OPELOUSAS - Louisiana State Police said they're investigating how a man died early Wednesday morning after police in Opelousas attempted to arrest him.
According to KATC-TV, Dennis "Mooney" Lazard died early Wednesday morning during a foot chase in the area of Herman Drive.
Authorities said people in the area called Opelousas Police and reported someone was trying to break into multiple homes and threatening residents. Police said when they found Lazard he had walked into an under-construction home in the area.
Officers said Lazard tried to crawl out of a window when police went to arrest him. The police said after a brief struggle Lazard fell to the ground, and officers called Acadian Ambulance because they couldn't find a pulse. Emergency workers pronounced him dead a short time later.
KATC reported that residents in Herman Drive told them Lazard was running in and out of several houses, banging on walls and telling people he couldn't breathe. Lazard's girlfriend said she dropped him off at Opelousas General Hospital on Tuesday night, which is one mile away from the neighborhood he was found in.
Once the LSP investigation is finished it will be sent over to the St. Landry Parish District Attorney's Office along with any autopsy and toxicology reports.
