LSP identifies man found dead near Juban Road
DENHAM SPRINGS - State Police released the name of a man found dead on the side of the road in Livingston Parish Monday morning, and said the driver who hit him wouldn't be cited.
Trooper Jared Sandifer said the body of Devin I. Hammond, 27, was found alongside Juban Road north of I-12. He said Hammond had been hit by a vehicle, and died as a result of his injuries.
Sandifer said Sunday night a pickup driver called the Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office and said they'd hit what they thought was a garbage can in the area. Sandifer said the driver met deputies near Juban and I-12, but after a search of the area the deputies didn't find anything.
Then Monday morning, State Police said a person walking along Juban called them to report a body lying in an overgrown ditch and partially submerged. LSP investigators identified the body as Hammond's, and said a witness reported seeing Hammond walking in the area before the crash.
Sandifer said Hammond was wearing dark clothing when he was found, and investigators determined he was walking partially in the roadway when he was hit.
People living nearby hope this accident will mean improvements to the dark and curvy stretch.
"I'm hoping this death will bring someone's attention out here to get something done," said Kathy McAree. "We've been waiting a long time."
Livingston Parish officials told News 2 there is a project in the works to widened that stretch of Juban and possibly adding sidewalks.
State Police said they do not suspect the pickup driver was impaired, and they were not cited.
