BATON ROUGE - Louisiana State Police said a wreck and chemical spill which closed I-10 in Baton Rouge will likely keep the interstate closed through the night.

Trooper Russell Graham said Hazmat crews are working to make the scene safe, after a tanker full of iso-butane wrecked and spilled its contents on I-10 East near the I-10/12 split.

Police say three 18-wheelers and an overturned car were involved in the wreck around 3:45 a.m. today.  State Police said they will not be able to open the road fully until all the chemical is removed from the roadway.

Crews were still pumping the butane from the wrecked truck to another tanker.  They said because butane is extremely flammable, they were considering burning it off the interstate as one option for removing it.

Traffic is unable to access I-10 East or West from Essen or Bluebonnet. I-10 East traffic is being detoured to I-12 East at the I-10/I-12 Split and I-10 West traffic is being detoured off the interstate at Siegen.

The closured backed up traffic across the capital area this morning.

News 2 will have live, team coverage of the cleanup and traffic situation starting at noon.
