LSP: Hammond man killed when vehicle ran off I-55 and flipped
PONCHATOULA - Louisiana State Police say a Hammond man is dead after a single vehicle crash Thursday morning on Interstate 55 near Ponchatoula.
Troopers say Nolan K. Bel, 37, was traveling southbound on US 51 and he entered the southbound on-ramp at a high rate of speed, which caused his vehicle to veer off the roadway and flip. Upon initial investigation of the crash scene, State Police determined Bel was not wearing a seat belt at the time, was thrown from the vehicle and suffered fatal injuries.
The exact time of the crash is not known, but LSP and the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner's Office suspect the wreck happened between 1 and 3 a.m. Thursday morning.
Investigators say blood samples were taken at the scene and will be submitted to the state crime lab for toxicology analysis to determine if Bel was impaired at the time of the accident.
