GREENSBURG - State Police said a Mississippi driver wasn't wearing his seat belt when he was killed in a wreck this morning at the border between St. Helena and Tangipahoa parishes.

Troopers said James Ponder, 26, died at the scene of the wreck around 9 a.m. Thursday.

Investigators said Ponder was driving a work truck and didn't slow down for stopped traffic, instead running off the road to avoid hitting any cars. Troopers said he overcorrected when he came back onto the road, causing it to turn on its side and slide for 70 feet.

Troopers said they're waiting on a toxicology report to be completed, but don't believe impairment was a factor in the crash.
