State hurricane recovery officials say they have created a $50 million program to help parishes hit by
hurricanes Gustav and Ike build affordable rental housing.
The Louisiana Recovery Authority says the money will go out through competitive grants to cities, parishes, developers and nonprofit groups in 53 parishes hit by the storms.
In 2008, the two hurricanes damaged more than 6,500 rental housing units.
The money for the program comes from federal aid issued by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
