INDEPENDENCE - Authorities say a man has been charged with the murder of his ex-girlfriend after he allegedly shot the victim when she tried to break up with him in June.

According to the Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office, deputies arrived on the scene in the 36000 block of Selders Road on June 27 in response to a medical call. Upon arrival, deputies found 27-year-old Letisha Rheams on the front porch of her residence, suffering from a gunshot wound to the back.

Deputies now say Rheams was in the process of ending her long-term relationship with 37-year-old Ollie Selders at the time of the shooting.

The sheriff's office says Rheams was taken to a hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

During the course of the investigation, authorities arrested Selders on one charge of obstruction of justice. Deputies say Selders gave authorities an account of the incident that conflicted with the collected evidence.

It was later determined that Selders was alone with the victim at the home and that the gunshot could not have been self-inflicted.

Selders is now charged with second-degree murder.
