Louisiana Mermaid makes a splash around BR
BATON ROUGE - A mermaid is making quite the splash around Baton Rouge this summer.
Venessa the Louisiana Mermaid said she started going around to pools dressed as a mermaid a month ago as a "quirky hobby." The wife, mother, business owner and part-time teacher at LSU said she's always been intrigued by the mythical sea creatures, but said her second life as a mermaid began when she ordered a custom-made mermaid's tail from a vendor in Florida.
Now that the water has warmed up, she has delighted kids and confused some adults by swimming in the pool at her gym and at BREC's Liberty Lagoon.
Venessa said her fascination with the lore behind the creatures makes it easy for her to field questions from the kids about what it's like to be a mermaid. She's also likely the first mermaid to ever have her own Facebook page, and said she already has 300 followers after just a few days.
The Louisiana Mermaid says Facebook offers a platform for her to keep her "little merfriends" updated on where she will be swimming next. She plans to continue making waves this summer by swimming in local pools and water parks.
