Louisiana Legacy: Crawfishin' Family
DUPONT - Crawfish season is upon us, and fishermen are feeling more positive about this season than last year. But it's about more than just boils. It's a way of life for families in Louisiana. The trade is passed down from generation to generation.
Carlton LeGrange's life work has become a family affair. His son Jonathan helps farm 3,500 acres of his father's crop.
"Just like me day, it's my passion," he told News 2's Kylie Dixon. "Huntin', fishin', crawfishin'. I love it."
It's that love that has made families like Carlton's a successful enterprise. A recent report shows the annual yield is about 150 million lbs. That translates to roughly $300 million to Louisiana's economy.
At the family seafood restaurant, Carlton's daughter Jennifer helps keep the enterprise afloat.
"When it's in full swing, it's non-stop," she explains. "from the time you walk in the door until closing time."
The LeGrange family knows the bountiful harvest provides more than just seafood.
"I tell everybody all the time, there's no business like the crawfish business," Carl says.
It helps define who we are in Louisiana as crawfish continues to be a Louisiana Legacy.
