BATON ROUGE - Lawmakers have wrapped up their debate on the pay gap between men and women, with competing bills on the issue failing to win passage.

The Senate and Governmental Affairs Committee narrowly rejected a proposal by Republican Rep. Julie Stokes that would have specified that pay discrimination based on sex is illegal under a current law barring intentional workplace discrimination.

Meanwhile, a more sweeping proposal by Democratic Sen. Karen Carter Peterson to ban private employers from unintentional pay discrimination has stalled on the Senate floor without coming up for debate. A similar version was rejected by a House committee.

The legislative session ends Monday.

On average, Louisiana women make 67 cents for every $1 men make, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
