BATON ROUGE- A bill which would have allowed Louisiana to update their ID's to meet certain federal security standards for air travel was shot down.

Making it though airport security is something college student Eric Vadrine has to do on a regular basis.

"Three of four times a year. Of course for the Christmas, Thanksgiving, Spring breaks," he says.

Vadrine said he tries to only bring a few essentials and travel light if he can.

"Driver's license, keys, debit card and that's about it," he told News 2.

But if Louisana doesn't meet Homeland Security's fall deadline to add more security features to state ID's and driver's licenses he might need bring more identification, like a passport, to get onto his flight.

In 2005 Congress passed the Real ID Act, requiring state IDs and driver's licenses to adhere to a certain standard. Louisiana is one of several states that doesn't currently comply with the act.

"There's a whole list of security procedures and methodology for issuing a driver's license: how you take the picture, when you take the picture," says Motor Vehicles Commissioner Stephen Campbell.

Campbell says his office is working hard to get Louisiana licenses up to par and admits that might not happen by fall. He doesn't think it's time for travelers to panic just yet, however.

"There is no Armageddon that's going to come about. We've been given assurance from Homeland Security," he says. "And there's no desire to disrupt national travel for some minor differences in the documents," explains Campbell.

A law from 2008 blocks Louisiana IDs from passing all the requirements. Campbell says legislators are working on a study to revise it.
