BATON ROUGE- Louisiana has domestic violence rates that are two to three times higher than the national average. This morning Beth Meeks from the Louisiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence talked to News 2's Kylie Dixon about what the state need to do to address the problem.

One method that is proving effective in other parts of the country is a risk assessment program that can tell authorities what domestic abuse offenders are at the highest risks to commit another domestic abuse crime.

"We should be crafting a system that works long before we get to debating how a homicide should occur and how people should be defending themselves in their home," said Meeks. "Instead of thinking about how we're going to tell women how to defend themselves, we should be thinking about what systems we can put in place before we get to that point.

The Louisiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence is a statewide network of battered women's programs who share the goal of wanting to end domestic violence against women and children in the state.

You can out more about the LCADV at their website or by checking out Meeks' interview.
