Loomis: A rookie center could start for Saints
METAIRIE - New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis says the Saints could conceivably find next season's starting center in this week's NFL draft.
The center position is relatively complicated one in that it requires reading defensive fronts and making pre-snap calls to fellow blockers. But Loomis says the Saints have the experience at both guard spots and at quarterback to make the transition to the NFL a quick one for a smart, talented rookie center.
Loomis stopped short of saying the Saints expect to draft a center. He's maintained that the Saints do not believe they have many holes and have the flexibility to draft at many positions.
Brian de la Puente started most of the past three seasons for the Saints, but left for Chicago in free agency.
