Local mechanics busy with air conditioning repairs
BATON ROUGE - Mechanic shops have been working around the clock on air conditioning units in cars as temperatures in the Capital Area soar.
Most mechanics say they've been working on about eight to ten cars each day as demand rises to meet the mercury in those thermometers.
"When June or July hits they pretty much know they need air conditioning in south Louisiana, there's no question about it," said Louis Altazan, owner of AGCO Auto Shop on Coursey Blvd. "They may drive around with a little rattle or something like that. They're not going to drive around with no A/C."
News 2 caught up with one of individuals stuck out in the heat as she was getting the A/C unit fixed on her car at Success Auto Tech.
"I got [into my car] to go have lunch and I noticed that it wasn't cooling, and I came straight over and got it fixed immediately," said Drehr Chidester.
Many businesses in East Baton Rouge said this summer has seen an uptick in air conditioning related repairs compared to last summer, a business trend that one could attribute to those auto A/C units working all that harder to keep up with demand.
"The number one complaint that we hear is that it's just not getting cool enough or sometimes we'll hear things like it's not cooling at all or maybe it's blowing hot when it should blow cold," said Altazan.
Mechanics also say low refrigerant or a leak could be the cause of an A/C problem. However, a broken cooling fan could also be at fault, and adding refrigerant on your own could damage your compressor, meaning it may be a job best left to the professionals.
